SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Sailors and civilians gathered at the recycling center located on Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) June 23 to participate in the clean sweep event hosted by the Sustainable Solid Waste Program and NBSD's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR).
The joined effort was developed through an innovative idea to combine a command clean up with a two-mile fun run.
"We are really making an effort to use space on base efficiently and this event provided commands an opportunity for a little summer cleaning, removal of recyclable trash and provided our personnel an outdoor fitness event to participate in," said Capt. Rick Williamson, NBSD's commanding officer.
More than four tons of recyclables were collected and will be processed by the Sustainable Solid Waste Program.
When asked what her organization did to prepare for the clean sweep event, Legalman 1st Class (AW) Robbin Swilley, Region Legal Service Office Southwest replied, "inspected, removed and disposed of all old outdated equipment and replaced with more efficient equipment in support of a better working environment."
Small, medium and large commands were awarded MWR bucks for the most participation. Region Legal Service Office Southwest won for small command, Coast Guard cutter Chase for medium command and Southwest Regional Maintenance Center for large command.
"I appreciate everyone's support in recognizing the importance of the Navy's Recycling Program and that the efforts put forth today helped divert recyclables from the landfill," said Matt Decker, Sustainable Solid Waste Program regional operations manager.
